HOW TO NAVIGATE
Step 1: Explore the MENUS
See the screenshot below. Menus at the top of the screen under the title organize available content into “buckets.” Click on a menu to begin.
- MAIN MENU: Contains all content from all of the menus in one place.
- STORYLINES: Each storyline digs into a particular theme of philanthropy (e.g. African-American philanthropy) through videos and historical photographs.
- PORTRAITS: Brief bios of influential and transformational philanthropists who are either donors, practitioners, volunteers or have otherwise made an impact on the community.
- ORAL HISTORIES: Video interviews with key leaders in the region about philanthropy.
- MOMENTS: Important dates in the philanthropic history of Pittsburgh. They are largely in chronological order.
- DOCUMENTARY: A 15 minute documentary of philanthropy in Pittsburgh.
Step 2: Use FILTERS
Once in a menu, filters allow you select which types of content you want to see. For example, you may be looking at portraits, but want to see only those portraits who are women, or who provided services to women.
Go to filters in the gold bar on the left hand side of the screen, select People, and then check the checkbox next to Women. This shows you only portraits related to women.
These filters can be used while you’re exploring any menu to whittle down your choices.
IDEAS FOR USING THE SITE IN A CLASSROOM OR PROFESSIONAL SETTING
- Have students watch one of the storylines and then research additional tiles to add to that story, or have them create their own storyline using a different philanthropic theme
- Have students select one of the portraits and write more in depth about their impact on Pittsburgh
- For foundations and non-profits, show the documentary and website to employees to help with strategic planning and visioning
- Review the works cited for ways to learn more about the subjects and topics for your own research
